Sewing a ruffle pillow

I have days when I get home from work and I just need to do something creative. It had been a few months since I had used my sewing machine so I decided to dust it off and get to work making a ruffle pillow.

This is the Cliff notes version of how I put together my ruffle pillow
To make the pillow you will need:
- A pillow insert (you can find these online or at your local fabric store (they’re inexpensive)
- Fabric: I used lime green stripes and lime green polka dots for the ruffles and the base/backing was a white cotton (I bought ½ yard of each fabric)
- Thread
- Rotary Cutter
- Ruler
- Pins (If you want to be more precise in your rows but I didn’t use them)
- Iron
Cut your pillow cover pieces:
Front: 18” by 18”
Back: 12” by 18” and 8” by 18”
(I used the white fabric for this)

Cut your strips
For a 12” by 12” pillow:
- You will need to cut 12: 4” by 36” strips (* Tip: Fold your fabric in half cut so it is 18” long)

Iron your strips
Fold your strips in half so they are 2” by 36” and iron them (*Tip: I am super lazy when it comes to taking out my ironing board so for a project like this, I use my hair strainer and just pull the folded strips through).
Sew your strips
Place folded side facing the bottom of the pillow begin sewing the ruffles. Fold back the ruffle every 2 inches so that it covers back up to meet the last ruffle. Continue till you use all 36 inches.
Place the next ruffle on top of the completed ruffle. Show 1 inch of the completed ruffle. So of your 2” by 36” ruffle, only the bottom inch will show for every ruffle. Repeat, repeat, repeat till you use all of your strips.
Back of pillow
For the bottom of the pillow place the 8” by 18” white piece with the bottom seam of the ruffle print. You will want to white piece to lay flat on top of the ruffles. Sew along the bottom and cut off the excess fabric. Fold the bottom of the fabric in a 1” line across two times (so fold it twice) and sew it. Sew the two sides together.
For the top half of the back of the pillow, place the 12” by 18” white piece with the top seam of the ruffle print. You will want to white piece to lay flat on top of the ruffles. Sew along the top and cut off the excess fabric. Fold the bottom of the fabric in a 1” line across two times (so fold it twice) and sew it. This still give you a clean edge where you put in your pillow. Sew the two sides together.
Ta-da! Put it to good use.
