My favorite cake

If you are looking for a real treat....I would recommend this. It is AMAZING!!!!!!
Paula Deen's Tennessee Banana-Black Walnut Cake with Caramel Frosting

In case you forgot: This was the time I met Paula and told her how much I loved this cake

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup chopped black walnuts*

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup heavy cream, plus more as necessary
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 (16-ounce) box confectioners’ sugar
2 cups finely chopped black walnuts, for garnish (optional)*

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour 2 (9-inch) cake pans.

For the cake: In a medium bowl, stir together flour and baking soda; set aside. Using an electric mixer, cream together shortening and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add eggs 1 at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in mashed bananas, buttermilk, and vanilla. Add flour mixture, mix until just combined. Stir in black walnuts.

Pour into prepared pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 35 minutes. Cool in pans on a cooling rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely.

Meanwhile, prepare frosting. Melt butter in small saucepan. Add brown sugar and 1/3 cup cream. Cook over medium-low heat until the sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Transfer to a large bowl.

Using a handheld electric mixer, beat in confectioners' sugar a little at a time until smooth. If frosting is too thick, add 1 tablespoon heavy cream at a time until consistency is right. Sandwich 2 layers of cake with frosting. Frost the outside of the cake. Press chopped black walnuts on the sides of the cake, if desired.

Adventure with Kate Spade

Such a cute idea!

Create your own Kate Spade inspiration board to be entered for a chance to win a trip and a $1,000 gift card.

I love the cohesiveness and simplicity of this one. Hopefully I’ll have some time to make one myself.

Sticking to my New Years Resolutions

My first craft fairI’ll admit. I was nervous. What if no one buys my cards? What if my tabletop display doesn’t hold up to everyone else’s. Does my stuff really fit in with the crowd?

The fears diminished the instant I sold my first card. Then I sold my first 10 cards, and then it was 20, then 30….and on and on.

Yesterday’s Indie-Mart was a success! I gained a lot of confidence in my work, got a lot of positive feedback and I got some great insight into what cards people like the most. I exceeded my selling goal by quite a bit and I had a great time. Thanks to those that came out to support. Our friends are awesome :)

BTW: I won’t be using the same tablecloth for the next show. Too jinky looking.

Signed and Sealed

Christoph and I celebrated our three year anniversary this past Wednesday by faxing in our contract for the wedding venue. So, it’s confirmed. We’ve got the place booked! We will be getting married July 3, 2011! That’s 352 days from today if you’re counting.

I thought I would offer up a sneak peak at the site. It’s amazing. A photographer’s dream location. There will be more details to come.

Out of town visitors

This past weekend one of my best friends/future bridesmaids and her husband came to visit us. I went to college with the two of them so I’ve known them both for almost 10 years now!

We had a full weekend! Somehow we managed to pack in:
- The California Academy of Science
- Beach Blanket Babylon
- Our engagement party which was followed by a salsa dancing lesson
- Trip to wine country which included 4 wineries and a walk across the Golden Gate bridge

What a great weekend!

110 down for the count

Indie-Mart Ready Check List:
- Made a list of what card designs I wanted to sell
- Took inventory of what envelopes I had in stock
- Created a list of what envelope colors I would need to buy
- Found a new wholesaler to order my envelopes through
- Took a gamble to save money and ordered each color envelope at 250 quantity instead of 25 (good move……higher profit margin)
- Envelopes received. Colors right on. Happy me.
- Brainstorming and doodles on what display table should look like
- Finding cute way to display my cards (bright colanders!)
- Working on creating the cards to sell!

So far I’ve made around 110 cards and my goal is to make 300!

Weighing in on Friday

Weights, wedding, weekend, who cares?

If you buy a scale on your lunch break, you’ll be tempted to weigh everything in sight. Even if it’s not on your own desk. My coworker’s stapler weighs a pound. Arm curls anyone?

Think you’ve found your dream wedding venue at a price that can’t be beat? You’re not the first one to find it. Booked from March-October 2011. November wedding? Maybe.

No plans for the 4th of July? Do I care? No, not really. Do I think I will still have a rad weekend? You betcha.

Happy Friday everyone!
